As of the 20th October 2011, Spina bifida • Hydrocephalus • Information • Networking • Equality - Shine, became the new name for the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH).

Shine is a registered charity, which was formed in 1966, initially to help families and individuals affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Today, Shine is a community of 75,000 individuals, families, friends, and professionals, sharing achievements, challenges and information on living with hydrocephalus, or spina bifida, and related issues. 

Shine provides specialist support from before birth and throughout the life of anyone living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, as well as to parents, families, carers and professional care staff.

Meet Rosemary, Gary's Mum.  

In addition to bearing the scars of cervical dystonia, lymphedema, cardiac syndrome X, kyphosis and other ails, Rosemary has now been diagnosed with NPH (normal pressure hydrocephalus) and every day is an ordeal.

Rosemary, Gary and his sister Tracy have been supported by Shine’s amazing volunteers. Gary is now giving something back and intends to cycle 8687 miles (13900 kms) to raise funds for Shine over the 12 months from Rosemary's 86th birthday on 22nd November 2025.
